Cultivating Sustainability: Nurturing a Greener Future
In today's world, the term "sustainability" has become more than just a buzzword. It’s an ongoing journey of learning and improvement to create a brighter future for our children.
We are fully aware that’s these points are only just touching the tip of the sustainability iceberg, so it’s going to take time, energy and dedication from everyone to achieve progress.
Sourcing Locally: Whilst working for Simon Rogan I was heavily influenced by his ethos of only using British ingredients as much as possible. It makes absolutely zero sense for me to import ingredients from South America or Africa just so these ingredients can feature on menus. Pale, sour and crunchy strawberries in December from Morocco or South Africa aren’t even tasty so why bother importing them. By reducing the distance our ingredients travel, we minimise carbon emissions associated with transportation and support local farmers and producers.
Embracing Seasonality: In tandem with sourcing locally, we prioritise seasonal ingredients in our menus and it’s really the DNA behind our business. Embracing seasonality not only ensures the freshness and quality of our dishes but also reduces the need for long-distance transportation.
Waste Reduction: Addressing food waste is another critical aspect of our sustainability initiatives. We've implemented measures to minimise waste at every stage of our operations. Unlike other companies, we only produce the amount of meal-kits that have been ordered and so never have much wastage.
We give our customers the option to add a small donation when placing their orders on the website to support The Felix Project who collect any surplus food and re-use it for meals within the local communities to help vulnerable and homeless people.
Energy Efficiency: We're committed to reducing our energy consumption by investing in new energy-efficient appliances and installing energy efficient lightbulbs across our kitchen.
Supporting Responsible Farming: We recognise the importance of supporting responsible farming. This involves partnering with suppliers who only prioritise ethical treatment of animals and never use pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. By promoting these practices, we're contributing to the preservation of biodiversity and the health of our ecosystems.
Engaging and Educating Consumers: Last but not least, we believe in the power of education to drive meaningful change. Our weekly newsletters feature articles about the industry that might not be obvious to someone in a different sector. Education provides the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to navigate these challenges. It equips individuals with the tools to innovate, problem-solve, and contribute meaningfully to society opening doors to new opportunities and empowering individuals to thrive in an ever-evolving world.
In conclusion, we believe that sustainability isn't just a box to check; it's a journey of continuous improvement. By embracing practices that prioritise environmental responsibility, we not only mitigate our impact on the Earth but also pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.
Together, let's make a greener tomorrow, one mindful choice and one mouthful at a time.
